Pakal the Great was the most famous ruler of the Mayan city-state of Palenque. He sat on the throne at the age of 12 after the end of the devastating war with Calakmul. During his 68-year reign he managed to stabilize the state and rebuild the city. Many pyramids and palaces were built during this time. He died on August 28, 683, and his body was painted with cinnabar and decorated with a jade mask in the Temple of Inscriptions in Palenque.
